The NY Times Reported that Jay-Z is the CEO of DefJam as of January 3rd.
Under the terms of the three-year deal, Mr. Carter can also sign a limited number of artists to his own Def Jam-distributed venture, likely under the Roc-A-Fella imprint. Mr. Carter said in an interview yesterday that the first artist he planned to sign was the rap artist Foxy Brown. As a label executive, he will likely earn in the range of $8 million to $10 million over the course of the contract, depending on the performance of Def Jam and his imprint, said executives close to the deal.

11.08.04-Foxy Brown Planning Comeback With Help From Jay-Z
If you saw Jay-Z's "Fade to Black" over the weekend, or were lucky enough to cop tickets to his "farewell" concert at Madison Square Garden last November, then you saw the show that not only spurred a reunion for him and R. Kelly, but the historic show that instigated Hov and Foxy Brown to start rolling like Bonnie and Clyde again.
"I think that sparked the whole, 'Oh my God, they love us,' " Foxy said during a recent mixtape shopping spree in New York. " 'Cause we didn't [do anything together] for a couple of years, it was so unexpected. He kept saying, 'I got Kells coming out, I got Beyoncé,' they never expected Foxy. I tell you, I never saw 30,000 mutha----as roar like that in my life."
If you ask Foxy, she'll tell you she's signed to Jay's S. Carter Records and that together, she and the Jiggaman will be unstoppable in 2005. (Jay says nothing is solidified on the business end.) "It's '96 again," she boasted, referring to the year she and Jay dropped their first albums.
"This is a rebuilding process for me," she continued. "The streets are begging for me to come back. They gotta listen to these bullsh-- female artists right now. They just gotta settle right now, and I don't think hip-hop should have to settle. They had a great teacher, but mommy's home right now. When I come back, it's a problem. I'm so back. I'm knocking out five joints a night — I'm a complete beast right now."
Foxy said ever since she left Def Jam last year in the wake of what she called mishandling of her never released Ill Nana 2: The Fever (see "Foxy Brown Claims She's Misunderstood, Collaborates With Lauryn Hill On New LP"), she's been wooed by everyone from 50 Cent to Shyne to Jay-Z.
"I sat down with every [label] president. They are like, 'Boogie, what do you need? You know how to make a hit record.' That's the bottom line. We been doing that since '95. It's a formula. You know me, I thrive off of controversy. I thrive off n---as talking. I get a kick out of that. Whatever I make has to be so serious, it has to be ridiculous. I gotta shake New York up."
And to do so, Foxy has a new album mapped out. She plans on calling it Black Roses and has guest appearances lined up from Luther Vandross, Dido, Jay-Z, Mos Def and Shyne (see "Foxy Brown Stays Tight With Shyne, Wants Jay-Z For Hip-Hop-Reviving Trio").
"My best friend Barrington Levy has a song called 'Black Roses,' " she explained. "He's been traveling all over the world and never seen a black rose in no other garden. When he found his black rose, he knew that sh-- was special. Y'all n---as can have all the female rappers in the world, but there's only one black rose. I feel that's me.
"I make my best records in pain," she added. "When I'm happy, you're getting the party joints. When I'm bleeding, you're getting the 'Open Book,' the 'Broken Silence.' You're getting the real grimy dark records. The Black Roses album, when I tell you it's a monster, Black Roses is a problem. Luther sings 'The Letter' over. Me and Dido are crying like, 'Give me one more chance, one more kiss.' I got Barrington Levy, Hov, Mos Def. I'm bleeding on this album. I do the reggae sh-- on this album. I'm bleeding, it's crazy."
There is still no release date for Foxy's project.

Foxy Brown: '2005 Is Gonna Be A Great Year'
By Jigsaw and Nolan Strong
Date: 10/15/2004 5:18 pm
Foxy Brown's signing to S. Carter Records was welcoming news to the Hip-Hop community and while its official, the female rap mistress has been selfish with details.
“I can't comment on the deal with S. Carter. What I can tell you is between The Fugees, Foxy Brown and Jay-Z, 2005 is about to be the great year in Hip-Hop,” she told AllHipHop.com.
Prior to an abrupt departure from Def Jam, she completed Ill Na Na 2: The Fever, an album critically regarded as her finest work, even though it was bootlegged and leaked on the internet. Brown recorded the shelved album for Def Jam, before becoming embroiled in a feud with Lyor Cohen, who was chairman of the label at the time.
“There's no more Fever album,” Brown told AllHipHop.com. “That's on Def Jam and I left them a year ago. I'm in a new situation.”
The new situation she is referring to is her signing to S. Carter Records, the latest venture by Jay-Z.
Sources stated that Brown received a $500,000 advance, but she refused to comment on the details of the deal. Jay-Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, heads up Roc-A-Fella Records with Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke.
Rumors of a strained relationship between Jay-Z and Dame Dash have been reported for over a year, even though both deny a rift between each other.
Jay-Z has increased his holdings outside of Roc-A-Fella over the last few years. His businesses include his S.Carter sneaker collection with Reebok, the S. Carter Records label, the 40/40 club and a minority stake in the New Jersey Nets.
Sources also stated that Jay-Z is looking to move into the world of boxing, expressing interest in upcoming Olympic boxer Devin Vargas, as part of a possible deal with cable premium channel HBO.
Reports have been circulating that the Roc-A-Fella label is close to being sold to Def Jam, in a deal that is estimated to be valued between $10 and $20 million, reports say. Other numbers have soared to $40 million or more.
When recently asked by Newsday about Jay-Z's status with Roc-A-Fella, Dame Dash remained elusive.
"Those are just rumors," Dash said. "But if Jay-Z leaves, he leaves."

In other diva-stating news, Foxy Brown is living large again.
Jay-Z's S. Carter record company recently gave the comebacking rap minx a $500,000 advance for her upcoming album, and Foxy asked that half of it be in cash.
Our tipsters report that Foxy stuffed the quarter-million in a brown paper bag, promptly drove to a Long Island Bentley dealership and bought a silver Bentley GT.

Foxy Brown Signs With S.Carter Records
By Nolan Strong and Raze
Date: 10/2/2004
According to sources, rapper Foxy Brown has signed a deal with Jay-Z's new label, S. Carter Records.
A source revealed that the deal has not been officially announced, because Carter has not settled on a distribution deal for his new imprint.
“Lyor [Cohen] was with Jay-Z in Chicago on tour and LA Reid was with him soon after,” a source speaking under the condition of anonymity told AllHipHop.com. “He is getting offers from everybody but since the Roc-A-Fella deal is not really done nothing can be made official.”
The signing would reunite the Brooklyn pair, both of whom at one point were both under contract to Def Jam.
In previous reports, LA Reid made it known that he was seeking to buy the Roc-A-Fella imprint from partners Dame Dash, Kareem “Biggs” Burke and Jay-Z.
Sources stated that deal hit a snag because the Roc-A-Fella partners felt the amount Reid was offering, which is stated to be around $20 million dollars, is too low for the label.
In early 2003, Brown had a nasty public falling out with former Def Jam chairman Lyor Cohen. The two clashed shortly after Brown re-signed with Def Jam Records in a joint venture with Sean “P. Diddy's” Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment.
She also negotiated an Ill Na Na Entertainment label deal with the Universal Music Group.
Her highly anticipated album Ill Na Na 2: The Fever was shelved and eventually Foxy was released from her contract with Def Jam.
Cohen later departed from his Island Def Jam position and now heads up the North American operations of Warner Music Group, taking top executives Kevin Liles and Julie Greenwald with him and LA Reid took over Island Def Jam.
Brown has kept busy, launching a line of custom furs and accessories and is currently developing a reality series for MTV. Album details were not available as of press-time.

8.22.04 RAPPING UP $$ --
Foxy Brown hasn't released a record in three years and her label, Def Jam, dropped her about a year ago. But it doesn't mean she's not still in business.
Next month, Alexis & Gianni furrier begins distributing the Foxy Brown Luxury Furs collection to stores across the country.
"She's young and sexy. People of all ethnicities and economic groups will want to wear her furs," said Bijan Khozooie, Alexis & Gianni's chief operating officer.
Increasingly, a record deal isn't the only contract a rapper signs.
Promoting and creating new products has become standard operating procedure for artists whose shelf life is slightly longer than warm brie.
"They are incredible business thinkers. Working the American machine is what they are doing. I think part of their art is controlling their checkbooks," said Bryan Mattox, an advertising executive at Burrell Communications. "They are artists of the deal."
In some cases, rappers are promoting products before they even have released an album.
The Game, a member of 50 Cent's G-Unit rap group, is set to drop his first CD in October, yet he could be found posing in Reebok advertisements.
"Just the fact that he is doing business with 50 Cent and 50 is such a good partner for us means that we will probably do business with him," said Que Gaskins, the head of Reebok's Rbk division, the home of shoes by 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Pharrell Williams.
Both Burrell and Reebok's market research found that rappers are the most efficient vehicles to reach a wide swath of consumers — black, white, affluent and working class — who are willing to pay to echo the lifestyles of their favorite MCs.
Reebok enjoyed a 350 percent increase in sales of Rbk shoes between 2003 and 2004.
When she signed her first record contract at 15, Foxy Brown made an effort to turn herself into a brand.
Sitting in the front row of fashion shows, being a fixture at all the right parties, maintaining a sexy appearance and playing out rivalries in public kept Foxy from fading away from the public's memory when she didn't have a record to support.
Her fans will buy furs, handbags and DeCarlo jeans from Foxy Brown, the label, in the same way that shoppers will rush to buy a new scent of their favorite brands of fabric softener.
"I wanted to create a global brand that superseded any record that I could ever make. I don't want my relevancy to just be tied to a record. I want to always be able to go to premieres and be photographed on the red carpet and be on Page Six, to still be necessary and relevant," Foxy said.
"This is progress. All of the ambitious rappers who surround themselves with smart people will have a diverse portfolio of products," said James Cruz, vice president of marketing and promotions for Violator Management.
P. Diddy is the consummate promoter who has launched the careers of many artists. Now he has a designer fashion label and is opening stores to further his brand.
"There are no 50-year-old rappers, so the smart artists are looking out for their futures."
The influence of rap can be seen outside fashion. Lil Jon along with his partners the East Side Boyz have been making noise since the 1996 but didn't get mainstream attention until he was featured on Usher's ubiquitous "Yeah" last year.
Now that his name has Power, Lil Jon is racking up product endorsements.
A good-time aura led Oakley to enlist Lil Jon to create red camouflage Zero sunglasses, among other products. Lil Jon's frenetic posture made him a natural front man for an energy drink called Crunk!!!, the name of a rap style that, like him, has its roots in the South.
